EL GRECO 400th anniversary. Crete, 1541 – Toledo, 1614.

To commemorate the four-hundredth anniversary of the death of El Greco, the Consulates General of Greece and of Spain in Hong Kong, have the great pleasure to jointly present the screening of the biographical film “El Greco”, directed by Ianis Smaragdis, and a lecture to introduce the artist’s key works and evolution.

Domenicos Theotocopoulus, called “El Greco”, stands apart in the history of art. Initiated as an artist in the venerable tradition of Byzantine art in his birthplace Crete, he absorbed the canonic principles of the Italian Renaissance during his stay in Venice and Rome. Once settled in Spain, El Greco became a painter of his own, he mastered the new language and transformed it, eventually creating an art absolutely unique and personal. El Greco is considered today as a precursor to Modern art.
